Over the past few decades, many more people are finding themselves in need of an efficient home office. Some of them work from home full time, while others have launched a part time business. Either way, they often face the challenge of establishing a functional work area in what is frequently the least spacious room in the home. Fortunately, however, it is possible to increase functionality by maximizing available space.
Floor space in a home office is often at a premium. Instead of sacrificing it to a bookcase, consider wall shelves. A good type consists of metal poles that are screwed into studs in your wall. The poles have slots, spaced at regular intervals, into which brackets are inserted at the heights you select. Shelves placed over the brackets can hold books, but can also accommodate a lamp, small printer, or fax machine.
You can gain usable space with a corner computer workstation. Shaped like a triangle, these fit snugly into the corner and can hold all the equipment you need. Some of them may be a little longer, diagonally, than a rectangular style, but the depth is usually much less.
Many offices in the home are established by people using the Internet to make money online. A chair with good support is necessary to help avert a stiff or sore back. You may not have ample room for something like an executive chair, however. One solution is to alternate between a compact kneeling stool and your normal chair. This can often help prevent strained muscles in the neck or back without sacrificing much space.
You will be able to function better if you keep your workstation desk neat. Small supplies, such as pens, note pads, and staplers, can be placed in plastic baskets which can be stored on shelves. Then, when you must clean, only a basket has to be moved rather than numerous small pieces.
Utilize the closet in novel ways. If possible, remove the rod for hanging clothes. You can build shelves along the sides of the closet to store supplies. You could also place a file cabinet, preferably on casters, or a bookcase inside the closet to free up floor space. A stereo and speakers can find a home on a shelf if you can leave the door open while it is playing.
Having an office at home can offer unique rewards, but also unique challenges. The more comfortable and spacious your office feels, the less you will notice the stress. If you optimize whatever space is available to you, you might discover that not only your morale but also your productivity has increased.
