Whenever you input the URL of a particular website in the address bar – Favicon is a small icon which appears at the beginning of it. Of course the website must have such favicon installed, so that you can notice it. It is definitely an interesting way to make your blog look different than the other sites. It can play a huge part in your website’s branding strategy. When others bookmark your blog and store it among other ones, it will be easier for them to find your blog, just because of your favicon. Make your marketing blog or personal blog different than the other ones!
You might be interested to find out how to set it up.
Here is my step by step guide how to do it.
At the very beginning you need to have a .jpg image prepared. It will be changed later into a favicon. If you are familiar with Photoshop, Paint or other similar software you can make such images easily. You can also buy images from Istockphoto but always be sure to read their license agreement on how you can use their images. It is forbidden to use any images representing established brands. Finally you can always hire someone to make such image for you.
Assuming you’ve got such an image – let’s get to the next steps.
1. First of all you have to make sure that the size of your image is no bigger than 150 kb, reduce it to a smaller size if it’s bigger.
2.The next step is to find free online software by searching the keyword Favicon Generator and when you are there simply upload your image.
3. Hit the button “Create Icon” and your favicon is ready to be downloaded to your computer.
4. Let’s get to the installation process:
- you can either install a wordpress FREE plugin created by MaxBlogPress
- or you can do it on your own, which I recommend. Why? If you can avoid installing an extra plugin, do so, as too many of them slow down your blog. Too many wordpress plugins can cause conflits as well. In this step you need to upload the fav icon image to the root of your domain name on your server.
5. Now you have to put a special code in the head section of your website. You need to put it in the header.php file of your blog and save it after that. The Favicon Generator website gives the code as well.
6. If you’ve done all the above steps properly, your favicon should appear in the address bar. It’s possible that you might have to wait a bit longer for the image to appear there. Be patient and you will see the results soon..
